Why you should be a slacker (occasionally)

I fully intended to have an amazing blog.  One where you'd sit up, maybe squirm a bit in your seat because my words hits so close to home.  You're inner light bulb lighting up and merrily flashing. (this is my fantasy every time I write)

But alas, what do they say about the path paved with good intentions?

I had gone through my pre-writing ritual when my phone buzzed.  Usually, I turn my notifications off when I write, because I'm easily distracted, like a toddler in a playground. However, today I missed that step and I'm thankful I did.

My daughter was at school, feeling sick and wanted to come home.  She'd been home the day before ill, battling some icky flu thing.

Here's the deal.  My mama genes are on steroids, if my girl's sick, I'm going to take of her. Doesn't matter if she just turned 18, when she's sick - in my mind she's still 2 years old. I go all mama ninja - whole treatment- make a nest out of blankets, set up the Amazon Prime for binge watching Bones, make tea, cover her in essential oils, and generally make a loving fuss.

After I settled her in, I tried to write.

But my mojo was blow.  Poof like little pixie dust- carry away in a puff of air.

So instead of finding an inspirational blog topic, I settled myself in and read a mystery cozy.  Yep-planted my bum on the sofa and read.  Pure bliss.

My first thought was "wow, Kirstin- you're such a slacker."  Shirking my responsibilities so I could indulge in a lazy afternoon of reading, banana chips and taking care of my girl.

Guilt came rushing in and then I squashed it.  Flat.  Guilt wouldn't be setting up housekeeping in my brain. Not today.

I needed a break and my girl’s sickness gave me the chance to take it.  Sadly, I shouldn't need an excuse to make a little time for me, but that's email topic for another day (yay- a blog idea!!!).

The thing about being a slacker is that it's necessary.

Life is wound up with deadlines and expectations.  A break from the chaos doesn't mean you're irresponsible, it means you're smart.  You're body, mind and spirit need to be care for- nourished.  It's time to take a trip to Slackerville.

So embrace you're inner slacker.  Take time to indulge yourself occasionally, the world won't come crashing down, but you may prevent yourself from crashing inward.

Recognize when you're just running on fumes and make the choice to take a mini escape.  Whatever you're favorite slacker activity is, make it a priority for an afternoon, a Saturday morning, or a Wednesday lunch.

You'll find yourself revived and refreshed and ready to re-enter your daily life more energized!

I know this works, because let's face it- I read an entire mystery while taking care of my duaghter and then received inspiration for this email while being a slacker- bahahah!!!  Ain't the Universe a hoot?
